At
St Giles we offer not only a wide range of courses for every age and ability,
but also a quality of service that is second to none.
All international students arriving at St Giles go directly into our orientation
programme. This includes:
-
A placement test - to ensure you are in the right class for you
-
An introduction to all the school's facilities and learning resources
-
Information on the local area
-
A welcome talk by the Principal of the school
Once you begin classes, you will have many opportunities to influence the
content of your courses, both on a day-to-day basis, and in fortnightly
counselling sessions with your teacher.
We have six levels of English, Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate,
Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. The tests you will be asked to
complete on your first day will help us to place you in the class best suited to
your level. This continues to be regularly monitored and tested throughout your
course, and class changes can be made at fortnightly intervals.
Maximum class sizes are 12 for General English and 5 for Executive English, and
there are minimum ages of 16 in London and Brighton, and 14 in Eastbourne. The
minimum age for Executive English classes is 21.
Every two weeks, each of our students will meet privately with their main
teacher. In these sessions you will discuss your language progress to date and
your language objectives for the course ahead. This one-to-one counselling
session is just one of the opportunities open to you to influence the content of
your course and ask your teacher about any other areas you would particularly
like to cover in the coming weeks. We maintain a written record of these
counselling sessions, which enables us to chart your progress over the duration
of your course.
At the end of your course you can request certificates to provide you with a
record of your achievement at St Giles. We offer students a choice between two
end of course certificates:
-
The St Giles Certificate of Studies is awarded to students who complete any St
Giles programme and records your finishing level of English (e.g.
Upper-intermediate).
-
The St Giles Certificate in English is awarded to students who successfully pass
a written examination at one of our six levels. Your teacher will tell you more
about these examinations during your course.
At St Giles we understand that different students have different needs. The St
Giles "learner centred" approach to teaching English enables our teachers to
meet your individual needs. Courses cover practice in all four skill areas:
reading, writing, speaking and listening; however, you will find the focus of
our General English programmes is on speaking and listening - generally the main
requirements of today's modern English speaker.
The minimum course length for General English is 2 weeks. There is no upper
limit, although if you plan to study with St Giles for 6 months or more we would
recommend our specially discounted Study Year Abroad programmes.
We offer a range of English programmes throughout the day. Each lesson lasts for
50 minutes and classes take place between the following approximate hours:
-
20 lessons per week morning course 09:00 - 13:00
-
15 or 20 lessons per week afternoon course 14:00 - 18:00
-
28 lessons per week full day course 09:00 - 16:00
Additional course options include:
-
Study Year Abroad (6 and 9 month options)
-
Exam Preparation Courses (Cambridge, IELTS and TOEFL)
-
Courses for international teachers of English
-
Young at Heart courses for the over fifties
-
