T HE SCHOOL

International House - Newcastle was founded in 1978 by Gill Mitchell and became the third International House school in the U.K. It is the only year-round school in the area. Recognised by the British Council and a member of EAQUALS and ARELS. The school is the ideal size for a school (100-300 students) - small enough to be personal and friendly, yet big enough to offer classes at all levels. Students from all over the world are taught by highly professional, experienced teachers with degrees and advanced TEFL qualifications, in small classes (average of 8 – maximum 12).

LOCATION

International House-Newcastle is situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, a lively university city in the North East of England with many theatres, art galleries and cinemas. It was recently voted one of the top ten most exciting cities in the world. The new Metro Centre is the largest shopping complex of its kind in Europe with all the famous department stores, 10 screen cinema and leisure centre. In a recent survey Newcastle was voted the favourite city in Britain for work, study and nightlife. Newcastle has 6 art galleries and 7 theatres, including the magnificent Theatre Royal. Just over the river there is the largest Arts complex outside London at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Visual Art and the Millennium Bridge, which will operate like a giant eye opening into a huge arch to allow ships to pass under. The River Tyne is also becoming the North's major centre for classical music with the opening of the Music Centre in 2004. Newcastle has just opened its 'Centre for Life', which is the most advanced project in science and medicine in the country. However, the most impressive culture in Newcastle is the atmosphere and life that makes it such an exciting place to live in. Newcastle was recently voted the eighth best party city in the world by American travel experts Weissman Travel. It was the only British city to make it onto the list! It has also been voted second best city in Europe for social life. Favourite city in Britain for social life, work and entertainment. It also has the favourite street in Britain!

FACILITIES

The school is situated in the heart of Newcastle's city centre, surrounded by shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, banks, and all facilities. There are 12 self-access computer all WITH FREE INTERNET AND E-MAIL and a students' common room for snacks, coffee breaks and socialising. Books and tapes may be taken out on loan.

A CCOMMODATION AND WELFARE

The school arranges home-stay accommodation with half-board, or self-catering in student apartments. Students have a single room and if there is another student in the homestay accommodation, they are NEVER of the same nationality unless the students request this. All host families are within easy access of the school and, with Newcastle's modern Metro system, students are on average only 10/15 minutes travelling distance from the school. Host families write to students before they arrive and also meet them where possible.

S OCIAL PROGRAMME

This is offered every week of the year. Live music evenings, Ceilidhs (Irish dancing), pool nights, films and theatres are popular, and excursions to Edinburgh, York, the Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall and the castles of Northumbria are favourites. Newcastle is famous for its social life and is one of the top cities in Europe for night-life (Weismann Travel). We hope our tour of the sites of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' will prove successful for 2002. Alnwick Castle, Durham Cathedral and Goatland, the site of Hogsmeade Station, were all used extensively in the making of the Harry Potter film and our tour will take our students to these amazing places to relive the Harry Potter experience

TRAVELLING TO NEWCASTLE

There are regular British Airways flights from London Heathrow and Gatwick, and direct flights with Air UK from Amsterdam and other European cities to Newcastle International Airport. Transfers from the airport to the city centre take less than 20 minutes - one of the fastest in Europe. Fast inter-city trains connect Newcastle to London King's Cross, with a journey time of 2hours 45 minutes. A regular coach service also runs between Newcastle and London.
Newcastle has one of the best, integrated public transport systems in Britain. Its Metro has won several prizes for its efficiency, cleanliness and reliability. Wherever you are in Newcastle, you are never far from a bus stop or a Metro station, and most services to and from the city centre are very regular.

MAIN ADVANTAGES OF IH NEWCASTLE

1. There are VERY FEW overseas students in the city, even in summer. The North of England is still a beautiful secret and IH is the only year-round school in the area.

2. Newcastle is very compact and easy to get around, yet has all the facilities of a big city - wonderful shopping and a wide variety of cultural events. Newcastle has easy access to wonderful countryside with historic castles and miles of beautiful beaches stretching up the coast towards Scotland.

3. The Northerners have a reputation for exceptional friendliness to strangers. The cost of living is also cheaper than the south of England.

4. Newcastle has close connections to four major universities nearby and three international colleges. International House gives advice and help on applying for the university or college course that is right for each student.
